Forgotten Photos

I found some pictures on my Iphone that I had forgotten were there. This is Steve and Greg celebrating Easter. You'll notice they both are nattily attired in matching yellow plaid shirts.

Lyla was unable to push the basement door open and come upstairs. She's showing us her "woe is me" face. Actually, now that I look at it again, I think she is saying, "You better get me outta here!"

I don't remember what this was all about. But Tommy and Jena were doing handstands.

Chris put a new roof on his house a few weeks ago.

And then Steve went over and put new gutters on the front of the house.

That's all folks!

Dot Com Days are Back

Last week, LinkedIn's IPO went crazy. The stock rose to $93, which is almost 600 times earnings. I was interested in the effect on their employees as they usually work for peanuts in hopes of such payoffs.. I'm sure their paper riches must have had them abuzz.

I don't know how many employees work at LinkedIn, but let's assume 1,000. We do know the employee holds 18 million shares of stock options at an average strike price of $7. That means the average employee earned $1.5 million on Friday. Nice day.

With so many options in play, it's probable these employees were accepting low wages and gambling for a jackpot of this type, but I'm sure this exceeded their expectations.

The worker bees at Facebook must be salivating for a similar stock market success.

Duplicates

I have this trait where if I like something I really like it. Ask Amber. I have bought duplicates of several shirts or dresses for the girls. I forgot I bought them. Saw them again and bought them again! So, you can see how easy it was for me to buy Steve the same birthday card 2 years in a row.

And if you know anything about men you can tell from reading the inside of the card, why I bought it! Twice!

Dear Madam,

First keep in mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an operating system.

Please enter command: ithoughtyoulovedme.html and try to download Tears 6.2 and do not forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update. If that application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5.

However, remember, overuse of the above application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Silence 2.5 or Beer 6.1.

Please note that Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the Snoring Loudly Beta.

Whatever you do, DO NOT under any circumstances install Mother-in-Law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background that will eventually seize control of all your system resources.)

In summary, Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot learn new applications quickly.

Good Luck Madam!

Tech Support

Dear Tech Support,

Last year I upgraded from boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 & I noticed distinct slowdown in the overall system , particularly in the flower and jeweler applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as NEWS 5.0, MONEY 3.0 and BASEBALL 4.1.

Conversations 8.0 no longer runs and house cleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nagging 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

Signed,
Kim

Lyla's new trick

Lyla spent a week with Hannah and Clayton. When she came home she could suddenly jump up on things. I don't know what they were thinking teaching her this. No one is safe now. Especially Bailey. Bailey used to be able to get on the couch or chair to get away from Lyla's playfulness. Not anymore! Lyla also thinks that she's supposed to walk from the chair/couch onto the end tables and check them out also.

A message for Hannah and Clayton: Payback...

The "Rich"

Everyone knows I get extremely prickly about all the negative talk about the "rich". I'm not one of them, but simplistic "tax the rich" lectures drive me up the wall.

My reasons:

1 - It's not right to divide us into teams and pit one against another. This is supposed to be a melting pot which accommodates a wide range of people. We actually punish hate crimes. Yet, hate based on wealth is tolerated.

2 - We shouldn't ask others to shoulder a burden you or I are shirking. Over 50% of Americans pay zero tax. Everyone should pay, even if it's a small amount. And we shouldn't be using the tax system to give more credits to people than their actual tax obligation. Sorry, but that's socialism.

3 - It's not logical. If we expect folks with more money to pay for eveything, then we should expect stronger people to do all the work, and smarter people to do all our thinking.

4 - It's an excuse. Legislators can't control spending or behave as statesmen, so instead of making unpopular choices, they chant "tax the rich". They need to stop whining and start working.

5 - I believe in the "land of opportunity". There are behaviors associated with tycoons that are deplorable (as there are certain negative behaviors associated with each social class), but by and large, they have quietly succeeded by providing services we need.

6 - They're not doing anything illegal. I've found that the press labels legitimate deductions such as interest payments and charitable contributions as "tax loopholes". They're perfectly legal. If we don't like it, we should push for changes.

7 - It's morally wrong to take from others when many of us give nothing. Everyone should have some skin in America.

8 - I refuse to be part of a political scheme. Putting people on the dole and telling them they can have more by taxing others is simply a way of brokering power and buying long-term votes. Why we tolerate manipulators of this sort is beyond me.

9 - I can add. We can take every penny the rich have and it doesn't resolve our problems.

10 - Who are the rich? There's a difference between income and accumulated wealth. Many retirees can be considered rich because of their nest eggs.

I'm OK with a moderately progressive tax system which involves all Americans, in which people pay a fair amount based on income, in which there are fewer loopholes and less room for public and legislative manipulation, and which is not used by those with a misplaced socialistic bent to redistribute income ... it's called the flat tax. Let's stop sloganeering and get it done.

Drug Running

On Saturday, I ran a bag of drugs to the police station and voluntarily surrendered them.

Maybe I should say enthusiastically surrendered them.

They were left over from Tommy's chemotherapy experiences and we have no further need of them.

Good riddance!

Easter

While in LA we celebrated Easter with Andrew, Krisleen (girlfriend) and his parents. Though his parents live close to us, we only see them in LA! Crazy...
His mom Joan fixed a delicious ham with all the sides. It was very good. Olivia got to experience her first holiday with some very nice people.

This is the apartment complex that Andrew lives in. He and Chris used to be roommates. After the meal Steve and I took a walk to the beach and marina to enjoy the beautiful day.

Ultralight Tent

I just acquired a new backpacking tent, the Tarptent Contrail. It's very light - 24 ounces - and packs small.

Here it is, as setup in the backyard:

This gallon container of milk gives you an idea of its packed size:

It's much smaller than my old tent in packed size, and it's over two pounds lighter (60% less):

With backpacking tents, bigger is NOT better.
